A suite of 24 pedestals for a mid-size gallery's permanent collection, designed to unify three exhibition halls under a single visual language while accommodating sculptures ranging from 2 to 180 kilograms.

The gallery approached us with a problem common to mid-size institutions: their permanent collection had accumulated display fixtures from multiple vendors over 15 years, creating visual noise that competed with the artwork.

We proposed a unified pedestal system in three heights — 900mm, 1100mm, and 1350mm — all sharing the same 400mm square footprint. The consistent base dimension allows curators to rearrange works across halls without worrying about floor plan constraints.

Material selection was critical. The gallery required a finish that would resist scuffing from frequent reinstallation while maintaining a seamless matte appearance. We specified a two-coat polyurethane system over MDF substrate, sanded between coats to 320 grit.

Each pedestal includes a concealed steel weight plate in the base, calibrated to prevent tipping at the rated load. The plates are removable for freight, reducing shipping weight by 40 percent without compromising installed stability.

Installation took three days across all three halls. Our team leveled each unit on-site using integrated adjustable feet, then provided the gallery with a maintenance kit and touch-up paint matched to the original batch.
